Myopia Control

Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. It often develops in children between the ages of 6 and 13, and tends to progress as they grow.

While anyone can develop myopia, the likelihood increases if one or both parents are also short-sighted. We’re seeing a global rise in myopia cases, it's estimated that by 2050, around half the world’s population could be affected. Modern lifestyles, with more time spent indoors and on screens, are believed to be contributing factors, alongside genetics.

Although myopia can’t be cured, there have been major breakthroughs in recent years in myopia management. New treatments can help slow the progression and reduce the long-term impact on your child’s vision. At Roberts, we offer expert advice and solutions tailored to your family’s needs.

Managing Myopia Progression

Slowing the progression of myopia in children isn’t just about reducing their need for stronger glasses—it’s also about protecting their long-term eye health. Higher levels of short-sightedness can increase the risk of more serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy, all of which can lead to significant vision loss. That’s why early intervention matters.

At Roberts, we offer two clinically proven options for managing myopia: specially designed daily soft contact lenses and innovative spectacle lenses—both developed to reduce the rate of myopia progression by up to 59%. These are worn just like regular lenses or glasses but use advanced optical technology to help limit how quickly short-sightedness develops.

After your child’s eye examination, our optometrist will guide you through the options and help you choose the most suitable plan based on your child’s needs and lifestyle.
